From the Desks of Phil Bond & Chris Hansen:Hansen Named President of TechAmerica Foundation, CEO Emeritus of TechAmerica
I want to thank you for your participation and support during TechAmerica’s inaugural year, 2009. For 2010, we are, as always, looking for new ways to advance the business of technology and to educate decision makers on the importance of our industry. One important way we are doing that is by investing more time and talent into the growth of our TechAmerica Foundation for 2010.
As a result, it is my pleasure to announce that I am transitioning to the role of president of TechAmerica Foundation and chief executive officer emeritus of TechAmerica. I am excited about taking on this new role to help realize the tremendous potential of TechAmerica Foundation to educate the public and private sector about technology's role in our economy and our society.
Phil Bond, who has served shoulder-to-shoulder with me as President, will take over my duties and become President and CEO. Phil and I have been working with our member leadership on their vision for TechAmerica for over a year. I am confident that he will continue to lead your association on the course established over that time and that you will continue to receive the same excellent level of service that you have come to expect from TechAmerica.
As our 501c(3) non-profit, non-partisan affiliate, TechAmerica Foundation educates industry executives, policy makers and opinion leaders on the promise of technological innovation to advance prosperity, security and the general welfare. This year, we will build on our award-winning industry, policy and market research such as Cyberstates, Cybercities, our Competitiveness Series, and Vision federal market forecasting program. TechAmerica Foundation is currently planning new marquis research and educational initiatives covering topics such as U.S. competitiveness in a global economy, innovation in government, and other areas of national interest.
If you would like to learn more about the foundation, are interested in supporting its efforts or have suggestions for projects for it to pursue, please contact Josh James at josh.james@techamerica.org.
Also, for more information about leadership transitions at TechAmerica, please see our press release announcing this decision.
All the best,

International: TechAmerica Statement on Clinton Internet Freedom Speech
On January 21, TechAmerica President and CEO Phil Bond issued the following statement on U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s speech on Internet freedom:
We agree with Secretary Clinton that a single, secure and uncensored Internet is critical both for human rights and global prosperity and that this principle should be an active matter of U.S. foreign policy. Therefore, we look to the U.S. government to address laws and practices in other countries that either facilitate censorship, oppression or a fractured Internet, or are unhelpful to International cooperation in cybersecurity and law enforcement.
For over a decade, the industry has worked with the government to address cybersecurity as a matter of pressing national concern with no geographical bounds. U.S. tech companies also very much look forward to working with the government as it steps up efforts to use the power of technology to help oppressed peoples strengthen their voices and gain access to information and opportunity.
In the mean time, open trade arrangements make it possible for our companies to project American values and grow American jobs every day with their presence in markets of various ideological stripes. Except in cases involving outright sanctions asserted by the U.S. government, American values also require the freedom of enterprise: Each company must decide where to do business on behalf of its customers, employees, and investors.

Federal Gov't Affairs: TechAmerica Applauds White House Meeting on Potential of Technology in Government
TechAmerica applauded the President for convening the White House Forum on Modernizing Government on January 14, a meeting between tech-savvy leaders in industries across the economy and government deputy secretaries to discuss bringing the transformative power of technology realized in the private sector to federal departments and agencies.
“Today, the President is demonstrating the same appreciation for the power of technology that helped him win office,” said TechAmerica President Phil Bond. “We expect a common theme emerging from the success stories highlighted today to be a need for agile partnerships between tech firms and their customers. If the government is to realize the benefits of innovation for efficiency and for solving the weighty challenges of this century, it must not wrap itself in more red tape. Departments and agencies need more flexibility to acquire the same expertise and solutions available to commercial companies, not less.”
An agenda and a link to video feeds of the meeting’s sessions are available on the White House Blog at http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog.

TechAmerica, on December 22, applauded the President’s appointment of Howard Schmidt as the first White House cybersecurity coordinator, calling the selection of someone with both government and industry expertise a “very strong signal that this Administration understands the importance of partnership between government and industry in tackling the security challenge of our age.” The association also sent a congratulatory letter on the appointment to President Barack Obama
"Howard has the perfect resume for the job," said TechAmerica President Phil Bond. "From two tech powerhouses in Microsoft and eBay, to law enforcement, to developing national cybersecurity strategy, Howard has literally done it all. He has led both sides of the partnership in the trenches and in the boardroom and understands well threats facing our economy and national security."

Business Networking: Technology Association of Georgia and TechAmerica Join Forces
On January 12, The Technology Association of Georgia (TAG) and TechAmerica announced an agreement that expands the member benefits available to companies belonging to both associations by establishing TAG as TechAmerica’s exclusive management and marketing partner in Georgia.
“With this agreement, the technology industry is forging a stronger force for innovation in Georgia,” said Jeff Katz, president & COO of Atlanta-based Definition 6, chair of TechAmerica’s national council of regional council chairs, and a member of TAG. “Companies across the state will have a stronger voice in state government and benefit from a broader array of programs, services and savings.”

Existing TAG members will gain immediate access to many of TechAmerica’s discounted business services in areas such as shipping, car rental and 401(k) retirement plans; the association’s member-to-member discount programs; and executive education programs offered in partnership with Stanford, Santa Clara and George Mason Universities.
