Technology Industry Highlighted in New Study

Tom Hopcroft, MassTLC and Mark Horan, MassNetComms.
Following months of work to better highlight the key role played by the technology industry in the state economy, Governor Deval Patrick and industry representatives gathered together at a joint industry breakfast in December. The event included an address and Q&A with the Governor, an industry roundtable and review of The IT Industry: Hub of the Massachusetts Technology Economy, a report commissioned by a consortium of industry representatives and prepared by the University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute. Among the report's findings:
- The Massachusetts IT industry is an economic engine for the Commonwealth and a leading source of global innovation.
- The Massachusetts IT workforce is large, diverse and growing.
- To maximize the future growth of the IT industry in Massachusetts, industry leaders and policymakers must address a variety of competitiveness issues.
The consortium has been working since 2008 to discuss the evolving identity of today’s Massachusetts IT industry and to better showcase and advance the substantial contributions the sector makes to the state's economy and other industry sectors. Consortium members include corporate, industry association and government leaders including TechAmerica members Verizon, Cisco Systems, AT&T, EMC and IBM, Comcast the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development, the Massachusetts Network Communications Council, the Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council, Microsoft, TechAmerica, and MTC’s John Adams Innovation Institute. 8th Annual Environmental Compliance Event
Join us on April 16, 2010 for our 8th Annual Environmental Compliance Conference, to be held at Philips Electronics North America in Andover, MA. This full day conference addresses compliance, implementation, enforcement issues, latest and pending changes and best practices surrounding Global RoHS, WEEE, EuP, REACH, Batteries, Recycling, Substance Restrictions, Chemical Regulation and Energy Efficiency.
Did you know:
- the EU RoHS revisions process is currently underway and current exemptions and exclusions may be removed for electronic producers?
- Latin America is becoming the new “hotbed” of emerging environmental restrictions for electronic products?
- Canada is proposing new energy efficiency requirements that would add certification and labeling requirements for covered electronic products?
- U.S. states continue to issue new and potentially conflicting environmental requirements for electronic products that may justify the need for federal legislation in the area of chemical regulation, end-of-life management, and energy efficiency?
This program is designed to enable managers, compliance executives, legal departments and environmental and facilities professionals to better understand and comply with global environmental laws and regulations. Participants are encouraged to bring supply chain partners with you, since working together on these requirements is increasingly important.
Hear the latest analysis from the leading legal WEEE/RoHS/REACH source, Allen & Overy, and receive a European Union update directly from leading U.K. government officials. Network with colleagues and peers about best practices and resources being used by tech companies to address these issues and get your questions answered. Learn the latest global developments from TechAmerica, the only association lobbying on technology environmental issues at the state, federal and international levels. Sponsored by Botsford EcoTech Partners and IHS. View agenda, speakers and registration details. Early bird registration ends March 15th.
