Tech Industry Sees Two Percent Job Loss in 1st Half of 2009

Over the Past Year, Tech Lost Jobs at a Slower Rate than the U.S. Private Sector

Highlights of What’s Inside…

  • The U.S. high-tech industry employed 5.81 million people as of June 2009.
  • The tech industry shed 115,000 jobs from January to June 2009, a 1.9 percent decrease, compared to the 72,900 tech jobs added in the same period in 2008.
  • From June 2008 through June 2009, tech lost 224,100 jobs, a 3.7 percent decline; the U.S. private sector shed jobs at a higher pace – 5.1 percent.
  • High-tech manufacturing continues to shed U.S. jobs – 69,500 from January to June 2009.
  • The high-tech services sectors shed 45,500 U.S. jobs from January to June 2009, a one percent drop.
  • All three services sectors saw losses for the first time in the five year history of this report: engineering and tech services (-21,500), communications services (-13,600), and software services (-10,400).
